Business Challenge

As a provider of third-party logistics (3PL) and supply chain solutions to enterprises in both North America and Europe, Metro Supply Chain Group offers customized solutions that span the length of the supply chain, from transportation and warehousing to associated value-added services. Headquartered in Montreal, it has nine locations across Canada including Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton and Toronto.

Metro SCG works alongside customers in retail, automotive and other specialized industries to uncover efficiencies at every step, resulting in shorter, more resilient supply chains and increased return on logistics investment. But with such a complex operational environment, the company was also looking to uncover efficiencies within its own operations, starting with communications. It was also looking to reduce the overall costs related to its ICT infrastructure.

Solution

After reviewing several solutions, Metro SCG chose Allstream UC Cloud Voice, a cloud-based service that ties unified communication, collaboration and SIP Trunking together into a single, fully managed, responsive package delivered over Allstream’s secure network. This scalable service allows organizations to reduce capital investment, complexity and costs, while enhancing productivity and the user experience.

Metro SCG deployed 276 users on Allstream UC Cloud Voice: 214 entry UCC licenses, 3 standard UCC licenses and 59 premium UCC licenses. It’s in the process of rolling out an additional 110 licenses in Western Canada and looking to expand to U.S. sites. The deployment process involved rolling out Allstream UC Cloud Voice on a site-by-site basis. At each site, Allstream assigned a project manager to oversee all activities required for the successful completion of the project.

With built-in SIP Trunking, users now have direct inward dialing and free-long distance throughout Canada. And Metro SCG now has a more robust system, with no downtime to date. Allstream UC Cloud Voice works with an Internet connection, with nothing to manage on-site; Allstream provides the phones, training and equipment management.

Free long distance within Canada and internal four-digit dialing has resulted in average monthly savings of $1,200 with Allstream UC Cloud Voice. The organization is saving $200 per site, per month, by avoiding copper lines (1FL’s). Costs can also be managed with predictable per user monthly rates and control over long distance user privileges, so the company is no longer dealing with issues related to unapproved overseas long-distance charges.

Scalability

Employees are assigned a softphone on their PC instead of a physical desk phone, while UC Cloud Voice phones are used in conference rooms. Metro SCG is no longer spending money on desk phones, and employees have more flexibility to work anytime, anywhere. The company also has UC Cloud Voice licenses on reserve as well as spare phones, so it’s easy for Metro SCG to leverage the UC Cloud Voice selfserve portal to quickly and easily add new hires to the system, and manage advanced features and functionality along with optimizing services in real-time

  • Hot Desking: Employees can login and work from any Metro SCG office. This allows them to be as productive on the road as in the office.
  • Twinning: Mitel phones are twinned with mobile phones, so employees never miss a call.
  • Unified Messaging: Voicemails can be accessed via email, so employees always receive voice messages no matter where they are.
  • Business Continuity: Users can connect to UC Cloud Voice via their softphone or take a physical phone to another location (home or other Metro SCG office) in the event of an issue at their location. IT no longer needs to develop business continuity plans for voice services since these are managed by Allstream UC Cloud Voice.
