With 20 stores across Oregon and Washington, including rural locations, Coastal Farm and Ranch needed to improve bandwidth and connectivity. Allstream stepped in to help power the store’s growth into the future.

Challenge

Coastal Farm had outgrown its bandwidth, with some stores operating on as little as six megabits of bandwidth in certain areas.

When Coastal Farm and Ranch approached the end of its Internet contract, Allstream and Pacific Northwest Telco worked together to design a new plan for improved bandwidth that would support the company’s growth well into the future.

Business Challenge

For Coastal Farm and Ranch, staying connected face-to-face is second nature. The company prides itself on being part of the communities where its stores are located, often sponsoring 4H and FFA events.

As the company looked to improve e-commerce and give customers additional ways to connect, it became clear that its existing bandwidth could not accommodate growth. In addition, with continued expansion, keeping employees connected to each other and to leadership became increasingly difficult.

Allstream worked closely with its Alliance Partner Pacific Northwest Telco and Coastal Farms to come up with a contract that would not only meet the company’s current needs, but would give them flexibility for growth and future-proof their business. Coastal Farms also opted to replace its analog phone services with SIP trunks.

By facilitating fiber installation at rural locations and increasing bandwidth where multiple connections were already available, Allstream was able to design a solution that would deliver Internet, site-to-site WAN connectivity, and voice services across unified access bandwidth at a net savings to the customer.

Results

With the improved bandwidth and more reliable connectivity, Coastal Farms has implemented internal conferencing for employee meetings and in-store guest WiFi. In addition, SIP trunks have improved voice services across the company, and Coastal is expanding its e-commerce services to meet customer needs.

Security and Compliance: The improved network design and connectivity allows better security for the guest V-LAN and improved PCI compliance.

Business Continuity: With many Coastal Farm locations in rural areas, outages were always a possibility. Improved fiber connections and automatic failovers reduce outages and improve continuity.

Collaboration and Connection: As a result of the improved bandwidth, company leadership has been able to deliver remote training and hold companywide online events. These improvements have been a critical part of keeping employees connected and engaged during pandemic restrictions.

Customer Experience: With a rollout of a mobile point-of-sale system and a new loyalty program available online, the company is improving customer experience and giving customers more reasons to purchase from Coastal Farm
